In Scotland, 43% of 407 monitored species showed a moderate or strong decline over the last decade (NatureScot, 2023), a 50% drop in traditional practices over the past 50 years (Creative & Cultural Skills (2015), and a rise in mental health issues such as eco-anxiety (Scottish Government, 2024). As Félix Guattari (1989) argues, the ecological crisis is an environmental, social, and mental crisis rooted in how we, as a society, produce future desire. We don’t need to be mathematicians to know that any unsustainable system will eventually collapse. Difficult times may lie ahead for humanity, but we will find a way through.

I am convinced that the answer lies in our direct relationship with the land, the river, the forest and natural materials. As a species, we must look to the past, reconnecting with our traditions, practices, and knowledge to restore a more balanced relationship with the landscape. Today, the disappearance of species and the destruction of key ecosystems seems to matter little to people; it is a crisis that is not personally experienced (Hulme, 2009), as we tend to view global warming as an abstract, global phenomenon. It’s a crisis that is neither experienced nor felt (Abram, 2013). In the course of my research into the ecological crisis, I found it’s presentation to be completely disconnected from the realities of local communities.

Given the complexity of the problem, my desk research focused on analyzing philosophical perspectives regarding how to address this crisis, specifically examining how art, children’s education, and artistic expression serve as key tools for shaping futures that are imagined, felt, and rooted in a specific place. The field research focused on understanding how, through creative practices and arts-based education, we can create tools to engage children and young people in Forres in the conservation of their natural heritage. To this end, my primary research centred on building strong ties with local artists in Forres to analyse local capabilities and opportunities for creating creative education strategies.
Seeking local solutions to global challenges

I conducted a social innovation exercise called “Letters to the Future,” inviting local artists and craftspeople to envision a sustainable future; this participatory action research workshop allowed me to gain insight into leadership dynamics, capabilities, and the potential for stronger community engagement. As a result of the “Letter to the Future” workshop, I found that the town’s artists and artisans possess significant capacity for environmental leadership and serve as a key pillar of the social fabric; crucially, their creative and artistic abilities hold great potential for driving environmental education initiatives in Forres.

To identify my innovation opportunity I wanted to analyse deeper how creative and artistic strategies are implemented to confront the ecological crisis, therefore I interviewed Louise Reynolds—Project Lead for the UNESCO Biosphere Communities Project (North Devon)—to understand how to engage children and young people in addressing the current ecological crisis. I also interviewed William R. Hall, an environmental educator from Moray, whose insights were crucial to understanding the tools and methodologies for involving youth in nature conservation through play, myth, and creativity.

This research process enabled me to identify my innovation opportunity— How might we create arts-based and place-based educational tools that use local stories, living heritage, and creative practices to help children in Forres reconnect with nature and imagine sustainable futures?

As the final outcome of my master’s project, I developed a tool-kit featuring a “Handbook for a Sustainable Future: An Aid for Imagination”. It includes characters such as “The Colourist” (inspired by local artist Jenny Harris)—the guardian of Forres’ natural dyes, who invites people to experience the world through painting and colour; “The Earth Storyteller” (inspired by local artist Draeyk Van Der)—a mythical forest being who guards Celtic mythological treasures and secrets on Forres’s High Street;
and “Uilleam Na Coille” (inspired by environmental educator William Hall)—a giant oak who teaches how to converse with trees and animals through myths and legends.

The creative tool-kit is an invitation to play and experiment; it features activities led by mythical characters who invite you to play with clay to craft Celtic objects, create myths and legends to better understand the forest sages and the trees, and to draw, play, write, and experiment to realign the next generation’s future desires, ones that are imagined, felt, and rooted in a specific place.

The project “Handbook for Imagination: Explore Forres with Local Makers” is part of the Rural Lab constellation at the Glasgow School of Art’s Highlands and Islands campus.

This project is an example of how tourism, conservation, and artistic practices can come together to create transformative impacts for both communities and the environment. It demonstrates the power of participatory mural-making, community-led audiovisual production, and storytelling within community-based tourism to foster meaningful change in territories historically affected by armed conflict in Colombia.

The project shows how creative practices can become tools for the conservation of endemic species, the strengthening of social bonds, and the ongoing peacebuilding process. By bringing together local knowledge, biodiversity, cacao production, art, and tourism, it creates new ways for communities to share their stories, reconnect with their territory, and imagine dignified and sustainable futures. Tourism as a driver of peace, reconciliation, and a renewed relationship with nature.

The Relationship Between Zocay Monkey Conservation, Illicit Crops and Colombia’s Peace Process

The Zocay monkey (Plecturocebus ornatus) is found exclusively from the Eastern Andes to the Ariari River, extending through the foothills as far as the Upía River. This makes it an endemic species and one of particular interest to primate watchers and scientific visitors. In 2008, the species was classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, taking into account the decline in its population resulting from the loss of 30% of its habitat over the previous 24 years, mainly due to deforestation and the presence of illicit crops. This has fragmented the distribution of this primate, and different groups are now found across an area of approximately 20,000 km² (Zocay Monkey (Plecturocebus ornatus), n.d.).

If we examine deforestation statistics from Tinigua National Natural Park and Sierra de La Macarena National Natural Park (Colombia), protected areas located very close to the Zocay's geographical habitat, it is evident that more than 3,458 hectares of forest were deforested during January and February 2022. These figures are particularly concerning, given that 55,000 hectares of forest were reported as deforested between 2002 and 2019. This makes the region one of the areas of the country with the highest intensity of forest-cover and biodiversity change, and one of the areas with the highest levels of historical deforestation in Colombia (FCDS Conservación y Desarrollo, 2022).

Photo 1. Mountains of Guasca, Cundinamarca, Colombia.

This territory is 50% páramo, a unique high-altitude ecosystem of the tropics and one of the country’s most important water reserves.

Just 42 kilometers from the Capital of Colombia, Bogotá, is located Guasca town, a territory full of páramos, peaks, and lagoons that hold a deep cultural significance for the ancient Muiscas, evident in legends such as "El Dorado". These sites were revered for spiritual offerings embodying ancestral reverence for nature. Today, archaeological discoveries—ceramic artifacts, gold, and rock art from pre-Hispanic settlements along Chipatá, Siecha, and Aves rivers—reveal insights into the past.
Archaeological Discoveries as a Gateway to Cultural Tourism, Reconnecting Communities with Their Roots and Strengthening a Shared Sense of Regional Identity

Natural and cultural heritage interpretation is an activity directly connected to the creation of tourism experiences. At the same time, it is part of an educational process that enables communities to learn about, value and develop a sense of stewardship of the values of their territory.
According to Don Aldridge, considered a pioneer of heritage interpretation in the United Kingdom and Europe:

“Interpretation is the art of explaining the place of man in his environment, in order to increase the visitor’s awareness of the importance of this interaction, and to awaken in them a desire to contribute to the conservation of the environment.”

Walking becomes a form of escape, a way of evading modernity. A shortcut through the frantic pace of our lives, and a meaningful way of gaining some distance.” David Le Breton.

Walking as a methodology to educate, play, experiment and recognize ourselves as living beings.

Born in the Colombian Coffee Cultural Landscape, surrounded by rainforests, springs and local communities, I developed a deep love for Colombian biodiversity. Aware of the degradation of biological corridors as a result of society's lack of territorial stewardship, from a very young age I decided to embark on a leadership and networking journey to promote a better relationship between society and its natural environment. In 2018, I was recognized as one of the top leaders contributing to social transformation in my home city: Manizales (Civic Award Semifinalist). This recognition was thanks to my leadership in the implementation of community tourism programs in the Coffee Cultural Landscape, and the development of walks with artistic and experiential workshops involving 200 young people and local NGO’s to promote environmental awareness.

This project emerges as an alternative for young people in the city of Manizales who are interested in fostering a connection with their territory, both in its natural and cultural dimensions. Through walks in the Caldas region, participants engage in activities rooted in education, experimentation, and play, allowing us to recognize ourselves as living beings rooted in the ecosystem and their cultural practices.

Through experimental and artistic walks along the trails and paths of the Colombian coffee region (colloquially known as “trochas” in rural culture), we immersed ourselves in a deeper exploration of local cosmologies and the senses through semi-structured workshops led by different artists who generously contributed their knowledge and practices.
The walks were free of charge, and over time, they became a kind of laboratory where we could experience different relationships with our landscapes, and even with our own feelings, through walking.

This project was inspired by The Poetics of Walking, a course led by Pilar Giraldo at the National University of Colombia (Manizales Campus), where landscape, agriculture, sustainable production systems, myths, the use of biodiversity, mining, water and our senses became opportunities for research while walking.
My aim was to take this knowledge beyond academic environments and explore how walking could become a way of learning, experiencing and connecting with the landscapes around us.
